California bowling center manager honored for vision to bring dreams to life
GREENDALE, Wis. - Bowling center manager and youth bowling proponent Jack Thomas of Sacramento, Calif., has been selected by the United States Bowling Congress to receive its 2008 Kerm Helmer Horizon Award for his efforts to establish and increase USBC Junior Gold and collegiate competition opportunities for young bowlers.
The award, which annually honors a leader in the bowling community who has the vision to bring dreams to life, will be presented to Thomas on May 9 at the USBC Convention in Kansas City, Mo.
Currently the general manager of Fireside Lanes in Citrus Heights, Calif., Thomas has been an active supporter of youth bowling at the local, state and national levels for more than 30 years. He served on the boards of directors of the Young American Bowling Alliance, the Bowling Proprietors Association of America and the NorCal Bowling Proprietors of America and was a BPAA representative on what's now known as the USBC Collegiate Committee in the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, a period of rapid growth for the program.
"Jack was a pioneer in many aspects of youth bowling as we know it today," said nominator Debbie Haggerty, mother of pro bowler and past Junior Team USA and Team USA member P.J. Haggerty. "He helped promote the first Junior Gold tournaments on the west coast and was instrumental in helping my son to the level he is today."
USBC's Kerm Helmer Horizon Award was created in 2004 to honor the memory of Kerm Helmer, the team founder and long-time bowling coach at Erie Community College who served as a board member, vice president and president of the Young American Bowling Alliance, one of the four organizations that merged to form the United States Bowling Congress three years ago.
