Pezzano Scholarship Seeks Recipients
By Joan Romeo, Chairman
The Bowling Writers Association of America (BWAA) annually awards scholarships, named in honor of BWAA, American Bowling Congress and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Fame journalist Chuck Pezzano of Clifton, N.J. to worthy recipients.
Thomas Madrecki, winner in 2008, had impressive credentials which included the following: Associate News Editor for the Cavalier Daily at the University of Virginia, winner in the Bowling This Month Amateur Writing Contest and a summer internship writing for Bowlers Journal International. To quote Bob Johnson, “Thomas is a young man who knows bowling, loves bowling and does an excellent job of writing about bowling”. Dressel concurs.
Thomas is also a Level One USBC certified coach and for the last three years, has served as the captain of his high school bowling team. He is currently attending the University of Virginia where he maintains a grade point average and scale of 3.75/4.0. Graduation will be May 2010.
The female winner, Elizabeth (Liz) Sautter comes with equally great credentials. Liz writes for the Homestead Herald, the local bowling center Youth Newsletter. She too is a USBC Certified Level 1 Coach and Todd Beach, the Homestead Lanes Junior Director feels she represents the sport of bowling to the highest degree as a bowler, educator and writer.
Ms. Sautter attends UC Berkeley, maintains a grade point average and scale 2.9/4.0. Liz is currently a sophomore with a graduation date in 2010.
Start thinking about whom YOU would like to nominate for the 2009 awards. With all the great young bowlers in California, I am sure you have a youth bowler in your center planning on attending college in the near future or who may be currently enrolled in college. If he or she is involved in the field of communications, then by all means, please nominate him or her for the BWAA Chuck Pezzano Scholarship.
For more information, visit either the CBW or the BWAA website and click on the scholarship tab on the left side of the page.
Deadline for applications is May 15, 2009. The winner (s) will be announced at the BWAA Annual Meeting, which will be held during Bowl Expo in June.
