Joan Romeo Honored with CWBA Distinguished Service Award
by Mary Lynly

California Bowling Writers Southern Director Joan Romeo was honored at the CWBA annual meeting on May 21, as the 2006 CWBA Distinguished Service recipient. She joins a prestigious group of previous honorees: Dudley Peebles ((2001), Carol Mancini (2002), Dale Penne and Nancy Arvanitis (2003), Juanita Blocker (2004) and Connie Marchione (2005.)

A resident of Van Nuys, Romeo offered a wealth of knowledge from many perspectives to the California Bowling Writers and the California WBA. She is the mother of five accomplished children including Robin, a 2005 California WBA Hall of Fame inductee and also in the WIBC Hall of Fame, and Tori, also a noted professional bowler. She has probably logged more hours in the spectator area of bowling centers than most - supporting and cheering bowlers and staying connected.

Joan originally hails from New York, and "yes" she used to bowl there where she promoted, served as an officer and even coached kids. She has been in the marketing field for over 30 years and has always promoted bowling, but her main focus is women in bowling. She currently has her own marketing business The Marketing Team and continues to help keep California's bowling associations connected with various sponsors and shared benefits as she attends national and local events.

Joan Romeo is an "idea" person, a valuable asset to any group. She is a classy, creative person who has the ability to log details like none other and go one on one with people on any level. She has been instrumental in promoting Pro-Am's, working with and promoting Team USA through USA Bowling, a consultant to CWBA for it's 75th Anniversary, a part of the base committee for the California WBA's "Celebration 2006 - A Tribute to Women's Bowling in California," working with the well known author and bowling teacher John Jowdy in promoting bowling clinics, the WIBC, and the list goes on.

Although she is not one to seek recognition, Joan has been much revered for her expertise and among her honors is the President's Award from the Bowling Writers Association of America for her endeavors in raising money for their scholarship program and Hall of Fame. She is the ultimate promoter for any sponsor and a talented writer.
